EFT Withdrawal Times Explained
Gambling site EFT withdrawals in South Africa are a two-step process: first, the operator has to approve and process the withdrawal, then the interbank EFT transfer has to clear on the bank side. The bulk of the verification happens before the transfer is even initiated.

How Long EFT Withdrawals Take
Electronic fund transfer (EFT) gambling withdrawals in South Africa are commonly described as taking 1 to 2 business days to clear. FNB, for example, estimates that an EFT from an FNB bank account to a different bank typically takes 1 to 2 business days. An FNB to FNB transfer may clear faster, in as little as 12 hours.
However, these bank-side timelines assume the EFT payment itself was submitted during the normal processing window. Payments submitted after a bank’s cut-off time are usually processed on the next business day. That means an EFT sent just before 3pm on a Friday, for example, might not show up in the other bank account until 3pm on the following Monday, with any South African public-holiday in the middle adding further delay.
EFT timing is further complicated by cut-off times and operating hours that differ between banks, and that may vary on weekends and public holidays. When betting sites say gamblers can expect their EFT in 1 to 3 business days, they have to factor in all of these variables, from the operator’s queue length and processing times, to cut-off times at the sender and recipient bank, as well as any public holidays or weekends caught up in the transfer.
Why the Clock Starts After Approval
One common misconception is that the EFT clock starts the moment a withdrawal is requested, but in practice the operator’s own verification and approval is a step that comes first. These are the steps that can delay an EFT withdrawal, but only before the money has left the operator’s system. The EFT clock itself only starts after the operator has cleared their internal review.
Most of the heavy lifting in terms of verification happens before the first gambling withdrawal. Bookmakers and sports betting sites may batch and process payouts overnight or at fixed intervals, which means the EFT may only be submitted after some delay. After that, any friction happens on the banking side.
Why Weekends and Public Holidays Slow it Down
The normal business day for EFT clearing is Monday to Friday, from 9am to 3pm. South African gamblers may not notice bank closures on weekends during normal betting hours, but it’s another story for withdrawals. If that next day is a public holiday, the money may take an extra 24 hours. The message here is to factor some wiggle room into expectations, and to be prepared for EFTs to land with a 24-hour delay when payouts are submitted on Friday afternoons or on Wednesdays, when the Thursday is a public holiday.
Same-bank vs Different-bank EFTs
The fastest EFTs are usually from an operator to the same bank account that was used to fund the account, in which case the money may reflect faster. In contrast, an EFT sent to a different bank account or to an account in a different banking group may take up to two business days to clear.
A betting operator may need the money for a withdrawal to sit in holding for an internal approval, but once the EFT itself has been submitted, the timing depends on the bank cut-offs. This is why some operators batch payouts, for a better chance that the money leaves the house before the daily EFT cut-offs. The result is a period of ramping up approvals and a wave of EFTs after cut-off.
