Starting Up

Your first step should be to find a place to play. This can either be with your friends in a light hearted game at home, at a casino that offers Poker rooms or at an online casino that includes online Poker. Once you’ve found the right place for you to play, you can get ready to begin. We’re going to cover playing at an online casino, but apart from the details linked to signing up, the general gameplay will be the same wherever you choose to play.

Once you have chosen the right site to play at you will need to sign up and make a deposit. Once this is done you will be able to get started with the game.

The first step for the game is for the dealer to hand out two cards to all players. These are cards that only the player will see, so they are secret. There will be two players who are forced to make a bet at this stage of the game. The big and little blind. These two players rotate around the table after every hand to make sure that everyone has a turn playing as the blind. This is to make sure that players can’t just abstain from every single hand until they are dealt some good cards. Once the first lot of cards have been dealt then the betting round starts.

Betting

Once the cards have been dealt and the big and little blind have placed their wagers, the betting starts. Going around the table clockwise from the little blind players have the opportunity to place a small bet to stay in the game which is known as calling, to raise the bet to a higher level or to fold which means to stop playing for this hand.

The dealer will then deal out three cards to the middle of the table. These are known as communal cards. They can be used by all players to create the best hand they possibly can by combining them with the cards that they are holding. Once the three cards have been dealt to the middle then there will be another round of betting.

Once this has all been carried out then the dealer will reveal the next card in the middle. This will make a total of four cards in the middle at this point. So, it means that all players will have six cards in total with which to make the best hand possible. Once this card has been dealt there is another betting round that takes place. After this another card is dealt out to the middle, then another final betting round takes place. Here once all betting has been completed then players will show their cards to see who has the best hand and wins the pot. If all players fold except one then that player will automatically win, regardless of the hand that they are holding.

Poker Names

There are different names for all of the different rounds in Poker. So, when the player is first dealt their cards and then the initial betting round takes place this is known as the pre-flop. When the three communal cards are dealt to the middle of the table this is known as the flop. Once the betting for the flop has finished and the fourth communal card is dealt this is known as the turn. The next round is known as the river. Then the final betting round is known as the showdown.

This all might seem quite confusing at first, but once you have played a few hands you will soon get into the swing of how the game is played. It’s more than just a betting game, there is actually a lot of strategy involved and the very top players will work out complex methods to try and give themselves the best advantage possible. This is why it’s important to watch the best players in order to help yourself improve your Poker game.
